Dr. Bello Mohammad Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, has stated that he strongly support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

He stated that the decisive action taken by the President is very important for the restoration of the State's political landscape which is undergoing crises.

Matawalle also expressed that the decision was a very necessary measure needed for addressing the political crisis which has been stopping the delivery of democratic governance and the people of Rivers State welfare.

He went further to request all the political party candidates that are involved in the crises to stay through to the president's declaration and work together to ensure peaceful resolution.

In his statement, he said; “In light of the current situation, the Nigerian military is on high alert to safeguard government infrastructure and ensure the security of the citizens”.

He “warned that any attempts to attack government facilities or disrupt public order will be met with a resolute response from security forces”.

While reflecting on the President's intervention with regards to the state of emergency issued, he acknowledged the weight of the political crisis facing Rivers State.

He also spoke on the unfortunate demolition of the House of assembly by the state governor which has made the state to exist without a legislature for over fourteen months.

He also acknowledged that this action by the governor, contributed to the political crisis which Rivers State faces today, which has also made the government to be unable to serve the people effectively.

Matawalle noted that the recent ruling of the Supreme Court reaffirmed the necessity of having a functioning legislature and also labelled the Governor's action as unconstitutional.

He also stated that the court's findings request for an immediate restoration of the state's democracy.

He further expressed his concern for the people of Rivers State with regards to the recent vandalization of property and threat from Militants, while acknowledging the need for a peaceful coexistence of the people of Rivers State.

He also acknowledged that it's the federal government's duty to ensure the safety of its citizens and also the protection of vital infrastructure in Rivers State.

Matawalle also reaffirmed the commitment of the ministry of defence and the Nigerian Armed Forces in upholding national security and ensuring peace, stability and effective democratic governance in Rivers State.

The Minister conclusorily urged all the stakeholders to comply and make use of this opportunity in renewing the governance of the people of Rivers State, making it beneficial for all its residents.
